You'll be happy to note that we only have to come up with 178.66(after fees) for this month! You'll be unhappy to note that we just had a foobar regarding paypal, so I am in talks with Limestone to try and get a delay so we don't get shut off the 27th and 28th. I think they'll let us slide after their reply.

Is there a way we can lower the monthly payment? 400 is way too much.. We cant always rely on people like rackz donating 100 per month.

Yeah, $400 is a lot of money for what we got. I only comment because I believe $400 a month is not sustainable with the dying population of Renegade. Hopefully we can lower it!!

Finally someone gets it.

You guys need to get together with the remaining communities. It's not even like we're not all on the same side or anything. Ren's dying too fast for strife to separate us or keep us from banding thaigether.

@shaitan I'm pretty sure you already posted this last year or so but can you break down exactly what we pay monthly? We need to cut something down cause this is way too much.

We could lower the bill if we drop everything but renegade which would not be good.

Should drop 2 grand or so in some servers and put in data center. The only problem is where and who could take care of it when bad shit happens.

^That. Do we use Linux anywhere? Could lower our costs allot!

Linux without any GUI needs less resources, thus a less powerfull server. My personal expierence (running both linux and windows servers) is that linux uses 60% of the resources compared to windows.

Here's a quick sumup:

- Ark, TF2 and Minecraft can run on a linux VPS , costing 60$ a month tops.
- Renegade needs windows, maybe 100$ a month, adding IRC there aswell.
- WEbhosting Prolly 50$ a year.

By going to linux, we could lower costs by 50% i think.

Im happy to provide my VPS to host any of the above.

We are running Minecraft on Linix already!

VPS isn't going to help. You're not going to maintain (or hopefully) increase server quality diversifying. You need to consolidate. You don't need to branch out to a plethora of unpopular communities just to have the notch under your belt. Consolidate the resources that actually attract traffic and revise your mission statement to reflect your core prospects. You want to host renegade to play renegade? Then do so, all this other stuff isn't being used or even bringing in the foot traffic.

Keep ARK

Cut TF2

Outsource minecraft

Consolidate Renegade

Consolidate social resources (IRC, TS, Website) and consider outsourcing

Revise budget and cut excess spending

Consider investors

If i recall from shai old post if the servers aren't getting used they are very low cost. But there has to be some things that could be cut. Maybe tf2 and all killing floor. Every time I play they are empty.

But then again ark and minecraft  have been dead lately  too.

Due now: Minecraft: $66.67

Due the 27th: Renegade/KF/TS3/Redirect downloads/IRC/etc: $135.29

Due the 28th: TF2/KF2/Ark/Terraria/IRC/Redirect downloads/etc: $147.69

Is this still the same shai

So the choice I feel people are putting out there is to get rid of one of the boxes then.....so which one goes?

I mean, I don't want to get rid of anything. I just wished we could lower our cost a bit. Because honestly, without rackz donating 100 (sometimes 200) every single month, we're screwed to pay the bills on time.

Posted

Can we drop some and consolidate it on one box? Tf2 kf2 kf and terraria drop and move ark to other box. I know terraria stays busy but how much do they donate.

Posted

But say .... that one box get's DDoS'd then what? Or the HDD's fail on it? You put everything on one box and that box fails for one reason or another...everything goes down. I'm not being harsh about it or anything like that but you have to look at all the other options.

Yes it would be nicer if the bills are lower each month I'm all in for that, and I'm 100% grateful for Rackz $100/$100+ donations each month.... but if more people helped to donate then each person would donate (if they choose to) say...no more than $10 - $20 each per person per month for bills.

I do get people on the TF2 server but usually, it is just 2 players who want to do achievements and when other players join they shout at them to leave all the time. So do I shout at the only two players in the game for pushing out other players and leave the server empty or say nothing and just leave them two players in to game for a while to get achievements? I can't be there 24/7 to oversee this and usually, it happens when I've logged off. The only thing I could possibly do to help is to keep more advertising on social media and Steam, which I can do after this week when university finishes.

But anytime shai  brings up bills we come together and  get it paid so as of now where good.  If not will raid volcoms account lol

For years now, we have had a problem with donations, and for years now the admins have stepped up to the plate and carried the load.  It is about time for the lower level staff to kick in some dough.   While we do have players that contribute, it is unfair that admins not only have the responsibility to make sure problems get solved, but spend countless hours dealing with the upkeep, and upgrading of their respective servers, then to boot, we kick in on a monthly basis to collectively make up any deficit so our players can play for free.

My solution to the cost to keep our community going, is to get rid of Limestone and move the 64 box to OVH,  At least they have ddos protection.

Posted

The thing is though, $400 is an insane amount of money for the services we have, as for HDD failing or whatever, that's the host providers problem, having to worry about data loss shouldn't be that much of an issue for us, the provider of whoever we go with has a responsibility to ensure that, and sure sometimes shit happens and we lose stuff, equally its not hard for someone to go and download the stuff off the box as a backup on our side. MPF has bills of 51 dollas a month...for their entire community?

Consolidate 2 boxes into 1 and outsource the third. Problem solved.

I can't donate because of my financial situation.  It's peoples own choice to donate.

Other than that: We should check where donates come from (what games) and see from there.

What specs does the server have right now?

Irc is hard to host, alllot of providers dont allow it. IRC is widely used in ddossing and makes the network it runs on vulnerable.

I have donated once before and will donate again in the future but I cannot commit to anything anytime soon

kids schools, holiday and decorating have swallowed the next few months of our moneys.

If any costs can be cut then it should be thougt through

I was actually thinking of  doing that just for this year to see what servers carry there on weight.

Well...put it this way, Joe donated $50 this month, that's enough for a 36 player minecraft server for 5.5 months via ggservers, with ddos protection, 1GPBS link, running on SSDs

How many of these topics has there ever been, do you think? I've given you guys the PC specs plenty of times on this forum. You complain about the money, and I respond with "we have so much shit, so much backed up just in case because we have been down that road before losing harddrives". The lasttime that happened, Rob, Strike, and I almost walked away from Rencorner. We'll keep going until we cannot go anymore..
We would've had money to shop around this December when Exeric donated $400(his whole point), but noone really kept donating so it could be done. And it was kind of a really bad time, I was home alot, but not really here.
Do not bring up other games blasting them, because for 2 years straight here Renegade donated nothing while Killing Floor paid everything. As far as I am concerned Ice, Joetorp, and Manuel, and a few of the Terraria people do their part.

Terraria: I'm not kicking Terraria kids out, because I like having some servers kids can play at with our rules that they wont get elsewhere(their protections essentially).
Killing Floor(s) I just turned on one KF1 server last week after a few people were asking about it, otherwise KF1 is dead. KF2 I have 4 running, but it was kind of a failure after KF1 players and mods took a gigantic dump. It isn't like the old KF1 where I could do things to make it fun, IRC bots for easy talking, and get people to the forums and donate.
Ark: It's my haven away from you guys and your stress.
Team Fortress 2: Those are Ice's and she can do what she wants with them.
Minecraft: That's mostly Joetorp and his wife paying for it, he can do whatever he wants(well if him and I don't get into fights about me adding Trusted Ranks of course xD ).

If you guys want to step up, help me find some games we can get into where we have: Dedicated servers, abilities to get bots made for IRC, and of course games people will like. I've asked quite a few of you the last two months for this. If you have ideas on wanting to admin servers and such, I will listen. Everytime I have done that with people here, they've pretty much pissed it away and wasn't worth the time.
I don't have the drive I once did, in other words my give-a-fuck is broke.

I waited so long to post a reply here because I didn't want to go off on you all. I've been so angry lately in real life, it bleeds out to people and I didn't want that.

Hosts Minecraft servers, depends on how many Joetorp has running. Takes up a lot of the RAM/HD space so it pretty much is just MC and IRC.

*edit* looking at NFO dedicated servers atm, they've changed that page since January. It's actually worth considering especially with the "pay extra get money knocked off the lifetime".
