Cannot login to marathon server

Hello everyone. After not touching renegade since somewhere around 2012, i found today that it's still being played (albeit using all kinds of patches and Downloaders). I was successfully able to get the game up and running and able to play on some of the servers. When i go to play in the rencorner marathon server, i get an immediate kick saying that I'm banned. I can assure you that I've had zero relationship with anything renegade since leaving the jelly servers as a mod many years ago. So I'm assuming it has something to do with the cd key that I'm using? Or there's something else going on. I still have the old cd disks from 2001, but i had no idea what the key was for them since i long lost the box. I ended up using a key i found on the internet which allowed me to install the game, but who knows what that key in its past has done. . 

 

Anyway I'm not sure if this is even what is happening or if it's something entirely different. I don't even know if people are still looking on here daily, but if so. Help! I would love to be able to go where there's active servers.

I tried to load up right before i left for work this morning, it began downloading the map so I'm assuming it's allowing me in now. Will know for sure once I get home ill post back if there's still an issue.

 

Is all of the server commands still running on irc?! Or is that a dinosaur that has gone by the wayside? I was a mod for several years over the jelly server in my 2008+ second run in the game. Things were still pretty happening back then. Used to play marathon with 25 v 25 for a lot of the day. I still vaguely remember server commands and know a lot about wonky things happening with bans. But i imagine it's far worse these days with just how much technology has improved since then. 

 

Is there any servers that get any traction with vanilla ren? You know, maps like field, islands, ect.

Hey dude I remember you from back in jelly days try to use renlist and click on GSA tab and log on from there

Wow there's a name from a long long time ago in a galaxy far far away . . :) you were part timing by the time i really got going in my second return to the game then and played jelly servers. I'm pretty sure we were both full mods together at one point. I always knew you as the best of ren players even being part time when you showed up. Cheers m8! Do you still play actively here? Anyone else playing from those late 2000 days i would know from jelly?

Yes i know your name is also familiar. I spent 99% of my playing time last run in jelly marathon. Sniping servers if it was dead. Did you used to play jelly mini or jelly aow?

 

I saw several familiar names today. It's amazing to me that this game refuses to die. There's never been anything like it.

Just started playing like from 2 weeks ago lol good battle on field last night dude. I wish I was that good now as I was before I’m too old now haha 😂 I used to be a notorious building killer in a full server where all the pros played ah well those days are passed now! I miss those old ren players but some does still play to this day!

Yeh man i know exactly what your speaking. Last time I played I was young and without responsibility. Now I'm married with 3 kids, 1 of them already 9. And i know i was one of those pros :) I had to take over doing all the base killing after most of you vets left! I always preferred infantry sniping but i was the jack of all trades out of necessity when there were still a ton of noobs still filling up the server in those days lol. You're best was oraca/apache/apc. I have no idea how you were so good aiming the guns on those things. 

It's just totally different altogether but i definitely had some moments where i was good again, but there was no consistency. That age thing is real. That and i used to play on total garbage hardware. P4 with an 8800gt that always kept me in the pipeline battling 70 frames one second and 20 frames the next. I got really used to that lag. Now i keep my gpu still mining and under/overclock while playing and never dip from 300 capped frames. . . Just totally different experience. But that makes it feel new again at least! Maybe since we just recently came back, more will come. . More will come. . Lol

We are the most vanilla Ren server that still exist. Most of the maps are the stock maps, with some fan maps that are close to the stock maps feeling. There are also some minor changes from the vanilla Ren.

Yes i have been playing a lot over the last few days. It appears this has become the very last home for all of us who like to play 25 year old games in multi-player online lol. I hope somehow for one more run where more people suddenly get the urge to come back. My urge happened out of nowhere I know that much. It's so much different then 2008 when a dead server was 12 v 12. Now it seems average is about 4 v 4.  Makes games completely different then running full squads.

Can't really speak about averages, the player count really varies along the day and week. Friday and Saturday on American afternoon-evenings have many more players than weekdays on Europe evening.

Yeah I'm kinda getting down after a few days how the flow of traffic is. Last night it got up to as high as 21 v 21 while i was on so that was awesome. Evening's are by far better for me seeing people playing the game. I'm in us eastern time. I work an early morning shift most days, done by 12-1pm so I think I'm in a pretty good position to be able to play when the most people are logging on. Diggin it. Honestly I had assumed ren had probably died or i would have came back a few years ago. When i was leaving my second run everyone had started turning to renegade x and less and less people were playing jelly. I found out upon some research now that it still lived for a few years even after i had thought it was going to be dead. 

It seems to mostly be a bunch of us all who've known this game for a long long time. Vintage gaming is really coming on strong now a days. Would be awesome if somehow new players find their way into this masterpiece of a game. The best fps of all time. . Because it's third person. . Lol. . 

They are selling this in a full command and conquer package on steam it seems. There's always hope for an aged wine. .

I for some reason thought the game was released late 98 or 99. I know that i got the game like two or three months after it was released back when all the servers were still supported by ea. But I've been living my own lie apparently for 20 years because i found out yesterday the game wasn't released until 2002 lol. Old age catching up to me. Back then i had such terrible computers i could barely play it. I played it in first person. Didn't know anything about V. Was a complete noob wondering around the map at 15 fps. That run was short lived. I remember i played it for a few months and just couldn't stomach anymore the lag. It wasn't really until my jelly run that i figured everything out and graduated to advanced noob. 

What I'm trying to figure out now is the overall visuals in the maps today are a lot different then what i remember them being. I used alternate created skins on my units back in the day but the maps themselves i ran vanilla. Is the skins in rencorner maps different then what i remember because I'm missing textures or something? Or are they just different skins? 

This is an example of what the maps looked like for me back in the day.

Now when i play there's all kinds of weird logos and stripes and strange things on the buildings and walls lol. I'm not sure if it is something that was implemented or if I'm missing something.

Maybe you are missing the RxD textures (<- link) for a few RxD maps?

What i currently see is even on the original maps. The example video i posted where everything is how i remember it, what i see now is almost like a wallpaper over portions of the buildings and map itself. Like very large posters of gdi and nod logos over strange parts of the buildings. Like the weapons factory instead of having something that looks like the original walls looks like a giant gdi billboard on the back of it now furthest from agt. Then inside of the building it's got something that looks like a striped carpet as the floor lol. It's very strange. 

I went to the website that has the four steps to getting renegade installed and just clicked through those 4 steps to get the patches and what not. I am pretty sure it clicked on all the most recent patches. There's nothing else that has come more recently then that to download correct?

Yeah i remember all those naked skins. I know i remember seeing that one in particular. I was trying to search for jelly archives to see if it was still up even though i doubt it considering the domain is for sale. I spent all kinds of time designing stuff at one point. It all started when i had to play at lowest details and couldn't see characters from any kind of distance, so i tried to make skins that just made everything brighter. Then i made some snow packs for nod that i really liked and some vehicle skins. I definitely miss my Pittsburgh steelers hotty that's the one i really wish i could get back. That was one i designed for spoonplex right before he passed away. 

I went back and actually watched that video i posted. I saw that yoimdrunk got credit for destroying an airstrip. Apparently back then he was actually at his keyboard! ! 😄
