marathon server question

since it came out on steam i been playing once a week on the weekend, for nostalgia, but back in the day a marathon server meant playing for 5+ hours, so why is there a time limit? are people to weak to play that long, is that the reason? also whats with all these silly maps, 10% of them are ok i guess. imo, maps that the game ends in less than 5 mins shouldn't be on the list. how many maps are in the rotation btw? and how many orginal/official maps is in that rotation? i also miss the days when you could tank stack (destroy the tanks and they look ruined), you repair them and have like 20+ tanks. but good job/work on keep at least 1 server still going.

Rencorner is not strictly Marathon, we do AoW (timed) as well. Most of the maps in the rotation have a chance to be either Mara or AoW, with the first has slightly a higher odd.

The 5+ hours matches usually occur on highly defensive maps, most likely Field and Under. After so many years playing, people got tired of these maps so they don't come up as often as they used to be, or are skipped with the initial poll, or only played as AoW (not sure if the latter is true)

Similarly, we want to some diversity in the maps we play and there are just not enough stock maps. RC philosophy is very conservative when it comes to adding new maps, hence we add only maps that play and feel close to the stock maps. From time to time we change the rotation, adding and removing the new maps according to the community feedback. The stock maps are always kept in (except for Hourglass).

I also don't like games that end before 5 minutes, but removing maps that allow that means we are left only with base defense maps. You might like it, but we have many players with many different opinions and tastes, we want to cater for everyone. It means everyone has to compromise on some stuff (for me, I think we should ban all snipers but we are where we are). I think we are doing a good job there.

You can type !rotation in the game chat to view the current rotation.

The shells are not really needed anymore since the vehicle limit was increased with newer patches, from 8 to 30. I do agree it's a cool feature nevertheless, and we had it turned on for some time a few years ago.

To some extent I do agree with b0y in this regard that we have so many non-official maps with less frequency of official base defended maps in between them. I think we should do a poll in game about which maps should be kept/removed from the rotation since we have a new player base after steam release which will provide an updated feedback about map rotation.

@Itai795 i get ya, yea i stayed on abit longer today and was playing the marathon part for the first time, i 100% agree with the sniper part. the shells really gave a more umph feeling, got the team all excited seeing how many we had prepared for a rush, now ppl just buy and die. cheers for the feed back dude! one last question thinking about it, have you guys messed with server size or its always been 51 ppl?

Are you in our discord server? There is a channel, Renegade-chat2, with the propose of talking about maps and rotation changes (at least, that what Shai encourages us to talk about).

The rotation changes every now and then, so nothing is set in stone.

Unfortunately, having big organized rushes became less common over the years. It still happens. But yea, with heavy base defended maps, it's more of buy and die till either you get a good opportunity for a rush, or the players' in one team all come together and organize an effective rush.

Latest announcement about server size:

It's 50 players by the way. The 51st is used for the forwarded that forwards the 51st player to another server.

If you have a team that works together they can donate to one player who can then buy a bunch of tanks for a rush. It still happens. The shells were also a bit unfair as not every vehicle type had a shell. Personally I did not like shells that much.

functionally shells are pretty bad, they are unfair as you said and they never made sense anyways. for nostalgic reason i do kinda like them though, because as others have mentioned, it required an amount of teamplay and dedication that rarely exists in these days. i also feel like players wanted to honour the commitment of the guys spending their time moting tanks just to rep them afterwards and actually hopped in those tanks compared to todays games where even if you do buy a bunch of tanks for your team often times too many people don´t feel compelled to take part in a rush.

i knew there were many.. but didn't know this many. i agree with someone above, to remove half of them the least lol. especially maps like Get Rekt b10, i absolutely don't know why this map is in there. field3_a without def towers the same.. don't need tanks there just infantry by tunnels and its done quickly. Under sucks b8 is also a map i got my thoughts on, but that one makes it at least nicer with the PP walks, on the other hand i do miss the field battles whenever i play that map "the original field part" is totally forgotten when playing that one now, kind of a wasted BIG ass map now, they could have flipped that part entirely imo. snow XL = imo better replacement of just the snow map, more space and tactics available there. same goes for SAND xl. eventhough i LOVE like really LOVE just sand infantry and imo it can stay too for beiing just 20 min long. 

 

but so many maps are in it just for textures.. FIELD RxD is a textured map, ISLANDS rxd, volcano rxd, those are basically islands and volcano and field but with a texture pack on them. i had them as skins in the past, untill they removed those w3d files from servers i believe. so perhaps u can remove one of these? i don't know, some questions about the newer maps too. don't like 80 % of them. yet i aint gonna cry about it, as it is part of the server. and i am glad there is at least still a server filled up these days. :P 

 

Deth_River is with the long tunnel walk to either REFS right ? for example i really like that map, it's fun with tanks and infantry. so some are great, some are terrible. in my opinion.

The original map 'Under' provides a nostalgic feel to gamers - would definitely recommend we keep this for the OG Vibe.

I led one time a successful 4 stanks rush in a 30-40 players game, through the original field, when Nod already had a one building disadvantage, leading to our win.

I remember how long it took you guys to come up with a viable maplist/rotation the last time. It took your slow asses over a month, when it could've been done in an hour.:character0022:

I cant wait when will be placed HD maps how people will complaint with low FPS on theirs iGPU.

I think that the stock maps should be more frequent in the rotation than the the custom ones as they are the spirit of Ren. We should only add like 4 5 custom maps in the rotation and reduce the rotation size to under 20 maps like we used to have in the past as it takes forever to play your favourite maps once it is past. 

As for the shells, they were really fun while we had them but given the current condition of the game, even if they are brought back, it won't make any big difference since there is no competitive play anymore.

It completely changes how the map looks aka new textures provided by AprilWar, lightmaps and extra details like grass, ambient sounds, trees, etc. and the gameplay changes are very minor, just quality of life stuff that should've been in the original game, and it doesn't have those blue pimp weapons in them like in RxD

I'm a fan of the map variety personally and would like to see more unique maps. It's only '48' because of duplicate entries(and RxD variants) to reduce the amount certain maps are played like Hourglass.

When will be fixed vis glitches on deth river and new crates wil lbe done also.
