Mods Cancelling Polls

Hello RC Leadership,

I’m writing today to ask that a formal policy be established regarding moderators canceling polls started by RC players.

Some months back, it was fair to say polls were being overused — multiple polls in quick succession were understandably frustrating. I’ll admit I played a part in that on some days. The good news is that the issue was solved when the 15-minute cooldown was introduced — a great improvement, honestly.

However, despite those limits and the fact that polls are now rare, mods continue to cancel them at will, acting as if they alone decide what’s best for the community. (And let’s be honest — we all know @ILL  is the only true Renegade God.)

Why should one person’s opinion outweigh the will of 60% of players? Today, with over 50 people in-game, @modestRobert — who I generally respect — canceled a poll simply because he disagreed with it. Is it RC policy that one mod’s personal preference should override the votes of 30+ active players? He later DM’ed me saying a nomarathon or endgame poll would’ve been fine, but not norep. Yet norep is essentially endgame most of the time.

From my perspective, RC should either:

  1. Prohibit mods from canceling polls except in extreme cases, or

  2. Disable player polls altogether.

I strongly urge RC Leadership to establish a consistent, transparent policy around poll cancellations. Players are the heart of RC — not overzealous moderation.

And to @ExEric3, apologies again for initially accusing you of cancelling the poll.

Thank you for taking the time to consider this.

Okey apologies accepted. Im apologising also. Against modestRobert action. Im fully behind him. There wasnt any reason screw that map with norep and I was at Nod side. You had all buildings.

I think its fucked up to vote on norep when u were on the winning side + u had field. I don't blame modest for cancelling poll. If it was nomarathon poll then its a diff story cause that doesn't impact the game right away.

I think i heard the game ended not long after anyway without any poll being passed.

You both are missing the point. If your positions are right, then let the poll go ahead and it will fail and another can't be had for 15 mins. What is the difficulty in that?

You both are maintaining that your opinion on the same is the single right opinion and for that reason you get to cancel votes. What if 60% of players wanted to move on? Why is your opinion more important than that of 30 players?

@cooldude7I want to add that it's not 60% of players. 60% of people need to vote for either option, not for the same thing. So if 60% of people vote, and only half of them +1 vote for "no repairs", then essentially 31% of the players can impose their will on the other 70%. For a poll to add timer, that isn't as big a deal. But for a poll to disable repairs on a map where one team has domination of field, it's better to not do it.

Also, for what it's worth, in my experience, polls to "Disable repairs" always go over poorly with more people on both teams than not. Usually a huge wave of ragequits ensue after those.

Anyway, I don't want to make it seem like I'm targeting you. I genuinely thought this was the best choice. Our goal as moderators is to try to steward as good of a time as possible, for as many people as possible. Since that's a sort of moving goalpost, there are a lot of judgement calls in the moment. I'm not blind to why you might disagree with this one, but I hope you can at least see I was just making the best call I could as a referee of the game. I was not trying to keep the game going because I wanted a high score, or I love DethRiver, or as a personal move against you, or some personal reason like that.

@modestRobert You're an awesome person and a great mod, and very modest. I don't think any of this was personal or targeted in anyway, and I hope you know that I'm not targeting you either. I do believe you when you say you did what you thought was right - I cannot fault you for that; I'd probably do the same in your shoes.

This all said - no one in this thread can seem to supply me with a legitimate reason for when norep can be used, so why don't we just remove it? Keep the makemarathon and nomarathon options and kill off norep.

All g! We cool. And yes I think removal of "norep" option is good, we are discussing it
