Timed maps

I noticed some maps are timed which is OK I get its not a marathon exclusive map or anything but why only 30 mins? Under came up today and when it was timed it cleared out the server along with a few complaints. With all the voting options I wouldnt think a game could go longer than the players playing it would want anyway. Was thinking a solid hr would be in order or something closer to that. The marathon maps always seem to attract more players too. Just an idea to throw out there.

Some time ago we looked at some stats regarding the length of Mara maps and those of the random AoW maps, and in a nutshell aside from Field, Under and the occasional AoW Hourglass they mostly never even reach 30 minutes regardless of game mode.

Now looking at Under and Field, they do last a lot longer but unless the server is packed with >25-30 folks at peak times they get done within an hour most of the time still. If we decide to put AoW a whole hour most of them will still get done from Base Destruction rather than Points at the end, so its still basically marathon...

You can think of AoW as a rush to get points before the other team in the time allowed rather than think about destroying their base only, on that perspective 30 minutes is a lot of time to get that rush going with all the components of a good Ren game (the beginning harv rush, first vechs in field, field control and hopefully the teamwork that goes with it in the endgame...). When a map takes super long we still see a wave of player leaving and joining.

I wouldn't as far as to say mara attracts more players... They come and go all the time, it's much more complicated that than from a stats perspective.

But by that logic though every map should be marathon because as you said most games end in under 30 mins anyway and even more so under an hour, so that way players are free to play the game out as they wish to :P 

there is always the turn off base defenses poll or sudden death poll. I get the point though.

Thanks, It makes me feel a bit uncomfortable having all the Mara boys staring enviously at my AOW manhood.
