Laptop won't charge

I have an HP laptop and I noticed recently it says "0%, plugged in, not charging" and obviously, it doesn't charge. As soon as I unplug the charger, it turns off of course. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Yes, Throw that HP laptop out the window and get yourself a better brand!

T....th.....thanks manny...

while I have you here, can you recommend a compact small laptop good for school yet capable of gaming? Nothing too intense just some renegade cs go or starcraft

Haha I was jk about that. HP is actally pretty good depending what laptop you get.

If you want a good and cheap laptop, you might want to get an Acer one. That's what I have that I use for travel and school. It's not considered a "gaming laptop" but renegade works fine and games like counter strike as well. I paid 500  for it back in 2011. Pretty sure u can get a better one than the one i have now for cheaper price.

This is an example of what I have.

I think you should check the power supply, get a voltmeter and put the probes on the 2 holes and read if it putting out any voltage.  Or borrow a ps and see that way.  I f the power has output voltage, then it may be the connector on your laptop (has it taken a fall on that side, lately?).

definately check the battery, with a volt meter like joe says if you got it. clean off any corrosion, make sure the contacts contact, all that kinda stuff.

I'm not technically savvy, is this easy to do?

Let's try this another way... do you know anyone with a hp laptop?  if so ask them if you can borrow their charger (power supply) to see if your laptop will charge.  If it works, then get yourself another power supply, problem solved and it will be cheaper than a new laptop.

Ahh, makes a lot more sense now. I think my friend has one, I'll ask him. Worse comes to worse, I suppose I would just have to buy one and see if it makes a difference?

I had the same problem with my Asus. Removed the battery cleaned the contacts, replaced it - worked.

I like that also, you should consider that 1st.

ill try it out

How old is your battery exactly?

The problem with laptop batteries is that they can't re-charge once they get to 0%. That's why your operating system (windows probably) will shutdown your laptop at 8% so you could recharge.

A good trick is to throw the battery into the freezer, that way the atoms get closer together. It's like squeezing up that 1% charge so you could recharge. It worked for me twice.

Now in order to do that:

  • you should wrap your battery with something like newspaper or cloth or tissue paper so it absorbs the condensation of water shall it happen. Also put the whole thing in a plastic bag.
  • Throw it in the freezer , let it in overnight
  • Some say when you take it out try to tap it on your hand. The corrosion that might have happened can "flake off" that way
  • Let the battery rest at room temperature
  • Plug it in, and re-charge

I don't think it's any harm if you try this and it failed

Else, get a new battery. Which will cost you around 90$, so if your laptop costs around 300$ (in today's market not when you first bought it), then I'd say it's not worth it so just live with it for a while and get a new one.
