CMPSKnight Posted May 23, 2018 Posted May 23, 2018 How would one install Ren on a usb? Found out today I can play pc games on my work pc on downtime. I know the TT patch puts files in a different folder then the game. How would I find a way around that? Also doesn't the game need registry file installed also? I'm familiar a little with doing this but not exactly how to do it step by step. From what I understand. Uninstall it on my PC. Then install it on a usb. Bring usb card to work pc. Run exe and done?
ROZPIERDALATOR Posted May 23, 2018 Posted May 23, 2018 just copy: -folder with exe -C:\Users\your_nick\AppData\Roaming\Renegade -C:\Users\your_nick\Documents\Renegade and paste in the same folders on another PC. it should work
CMPSKnight Posted May 23, 2018 Author Posted May 23, 2018 I'm trying to limit what I put on my work pc. Sometimes they audit it. Can I just keep them on the usb, and it'll work?
Vultima Posted May 23, 2018 Posted May 23, 2018 No because TT won't know to look where you've put them, It would be pretty odd of them to audit your AppData folders though, since most of the stuff in that is junk... 1
Itai795 Posted May 23, 2018 Posted May 23, 2018 You can delete the local files whenever you stop playing and reinstall them later. You can create a simple .BAT file to do that for you (1 for install 1 for uninstall).
Vultima Posted May 23, 2018 Posted May 23, 2018 If its a half decent setup though, it will freak out if you try to execute it(the bat)
CMPSKnight Posted May 23, 2018 Author Posted May 23, 2018 moved ttfs & ren folder to usb. moved ttfs to where it needs to be, moved ren it needs to be. installed dirextx. ran game. Good to go :D
shaitan Posted May 25, 2018 Posted May 25, 2018 You can also leave it on the usb to run from if you have Admin and use symbolic links(google hard & soft symbolic links). I use those to trick iTunes to get that 75gb movies folder off my C drive and onto my 3TB drive. usb may be a little tricky since the drive letter may change, but you could force it to stay F:/ for example or redo the link in cmd. 1
shaitan Posted May 27, 2018 Posted May 27, 2018 This is what I was talking about @Charre: https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/16226/complete-guide-to-symbolic-links-symlinks-on-windows-or-linux/ For example ITunes does not really like me moving movies to other drives and trying to use them from there, with their DRM crap it wont play and I have to re-download and it stays on the C drive anyway. So, what I do is open a CMD prompt and type in: mklink /J "C:\Users\Joel\Music\iTunes" "G:\iTunes" CMD does it and gives this message: Junction created for C:\Users\Joel\Music\iTunes <<===>> G:\iTunes All of my DRM stuff I plop onto my backup harddrive, and iTunes is none the wiser. It "thinks" all of my movies are in C:\Users\Joel\Music\iTunes, when in reality they are in G:\iTunes. Think of it like a Shortcut Folder you've made to your desktop. In theory, he could use that USB stick and do the same. 1 1

CMPSKnight Posted May 28, 2018 Author Posted May 28, 2018 haha. Yeah. Went home. Plugged in USB. Moved the TTFS files from the APP Folder to my USB. Moved the Westwood Folder to my USB. Went to work. Plugged in the USB. Moved the TTFS folder to the APP folder. Kept my Westwood Folder in the USB. By the way I have Renlist Folder in my westwood folder. Launched Renlist. Went to the Options setting on Renlist program. Directed to correct directory in my usb. Launched game. Bam! WINNING! Yeah playing on my down time is fun :) or Netflix/Hulu. 1
