Scripts 4.8 Update 4 is now available

I would like to thank Unstoppable, dblaney1 and cyberarm for their contributions to 4.8 Update 4 (If I missed anyone else who contributed to 4.8 Update 4, sorry). 

  • New scripts and changes to existing scripts by Jerad2142. 
  • New scripts and changes to existing scripts by Unstoppable. 
  • Added preliminary support for controllers - enjoy smooth vehicle steering! 
  • Added a potential fix for vehicle limits randomly breaking after custom maps. 
  • Added a new LevelEdit setting, “HideTeamBattlefieldInformation”, which will make the building icon not show up on battle field and team information screens. 
  • Added a copy constructor and equals operator overload to HashTemplateClass. (Credits to Tuna for figuring out). 
  • Added the engine call Set_Enable_Foot_Steps which can enable or disable the footstep effects and sounds of a specific infantry. 
  • Added the tt.ini keyword ReplaceBeaconWithEquipment which turns the Beacon object in the PT into an equipment menu. 
  • Added PDDUMP and PODUMP console commands that dump information about player data, objects and vehicles. 
  • Added the engine call Trigger_Smooth_Skeleton_Height_Resize which allows the programmer to make a soldier’s skeleton smoothly rescale at a set speed without spamming the network. 
  • Added PCC, PCCT and PCCP console commands to print text to client's console. 
  • Detect if FDS is running under Wine on Linux and fix console output if so. 
  • Changed how the TRAIN_TRACK_COLLISION_GROUP works (now only collides with itself). 
  • Changed how the TRAIN_COLLISION_GROUP works (now only collides with TRAIN_TRACK, SOLDIER, DEFAULT, BULLET, and C4 
  • Improved the equipment menu to now check if your weapon is full, in which case it will block you buying more. Soldiers will have to reload guns as it only fills your bag rounds unless you don’t have the gun at all. This is unfortunately just the way powerups work and I wasn’t going to rework the system. 
  • The gameover command can now be used in single player to end the level. Note: this will result in 3 stars at best. 
  • Fixes so team GDI can now own an Obelisk. 
  • Fixed Giant Kane Hologram’s mouth movement in single player so he talks once more. 
  • Fixes for the Remote FDS Console and the opening if the F8 console is active. 
  • Vehicle Management Dialog now shows the name of AI in your vehicle instead of “None” 
  • Removed outdated code from the equipment menu that would block beacons from being purchasable unless settings had been chosen on the server. 
  • Fix PLAYER_INFO not printing some players when the player limit changes and there are more players than player limit. 
  • Fixed an issue with hearing sounds ahead of the player when game ends or if the player leaves while zoomed in with a scope.

  • Added JMG_Utility_Zone_Damage_While_In_Zone for Mortalc13  
  • Added JMG_Utility_Visible_Vehicle_Occupants for rackz  
  • Added JMG_Utility_Zone_Disable_Specific_Weapon_Presets for rackz

Sure it is, that means less time and effort necessary to reverse engineer things. But it does come with some caveats, since EA understandably can't re-distribute many of the 3rd party libraries and it may not even be possible to get our hands on some of them with the correct version - it may prove tricky to get it to even compile.

That said, those parts of the code can now be stripped out and replaced with new. But as with anything, that'll take some time. And in the end I imagine we'll end up with a variety of different standalone versions of Renegade, since this will be an entirely separate build of the game and not some mod you upload to the workshop.

I imagine it ought to make it easier for improvements to be made to the "scripts", though!

Next weeks we will get more info from W3DHub where it will goes. Released sourced code definitelly helps. Just dont wait tomorrow you will have Ren 3 based on scripts 6.x without lags and with ray tracing and UHD textures.

so does it mean we can make a remastered of ren with the help of released source code?

If people are able to get the source to a state where it builds, sure. But the question then is whether or not it would be worth improving the old codebase or just start fresh in a modern engine like Renegade X did.

actually im ok with the original ren, i dont mind the old graphics

the problem is we need a larger community, more and new players

20 yrs ago we had like 100 servers and many of them were crowded 24/7

so we were able to play ren anytime we want, no matter what time it was

today i have to wait until 6/7 pm cuz at earlier times servers are all just empty

I agree, while I appreciate what RenegadeX has done immensely, it feels a bit too floaty and doesn't quite hit the same feels Renegade classic does. The graphics I'm also perfectly fine with, it's actually quite nice playing a game that doesn't cause my PC to turn my small office into a sauna for once.

I think the community has been dwindling for a variety of reasons;

1. People probably assume you have to buy it still, even if the price is rather negligible for the C&C collection
2. Need to install 3rd party scripts for MP functionality
3. Matches can be quite repetitive and often end up with ramjet farming
4. People probably just forgot about it or assume it's proper dead (like I did)
5. Modern games fulfilling a similar niche came around, such as Planetside 2

I seem to recall back in ye olden days when I was a moderator for BlackIntel they, or some other community was hosting a server where Havoc/Sakura was flat-out disabled to prevent one-hit kill spamming. Normal snipers and PIC/Railgun was still a thing though, since they have a rather lengthy reload and limited range. It was quite successful but the Renegade community back then was also probably at its peak.

The fact we now have access to the source may alleviate some of these issues, but it'll be a while until we see anything.

i also appreciate the effort they put forth while making renx as its completely a fan made game, thou renx does really not feel like ren

i think the biggest reason for the community is so small today is that ppl just dont want to play a game with graphics 23 yrs old

i cant blame them, i love nfs racing games but today i would not play nfs underground (2003), instead i would play nfs unbound (2022)

for same reason ppl quit playing ren and they just rather play one of the latest cod or battelfield games

what we need is a remastered of ren with refurbished graphics that will still feel like ren

I have the perfect solution to bring Renegade back, just make a Battle Royal server 😭 😭 

Youngins will flock to it, oldins will remain.

EA needs to package the game with scripts. But EA sucks so it’ll never happen

they did a great job with serious sam hd

original serious sam was made in 2001

they made serious sam hd in 2009

hd version felt just like the original game only with some enhanced graphics

we need the same with ren

This would not be a good idea. Cause then each time tt wants to update scripts it would need to ask ea for permission and to validate the last version.

We still play organized small games every day.

 

For me, the marathon style game play with all the ridiculous boxes and custom maps ruins the public server.   Along with stupid rules like no E Fire.  As it stands now the two public server options for renegade are completely unplayable (for me).  

 

But I'm probably not the casual audience the servers are hoping to attract.
