Communication improvements

Has RenCorner ever looked into tidying up the textfeed?

Because everything is dumped in the textfeed it's often tricky to notice or be noticed when communicating with your team. I've always figured that if it showed ONLY chat, what a world of difference it would make to teamwork and communications. Nobody would need to type in caps, nobody would need to copy/paste their call for a rush multiple times, nobody would need to use keyboard binds to coordinate.

A lot of stuff in the textfeed is redundant, like EVA announcements (that you can hear), server messages (which could be shown on the welcome screen or if called up by !rules), repair notices (why do we need to know who is repairing the Hand of Nod right now?).

The big one would be the killfeed. Hear me out... if you kill someone you know you've killed them because you see it, or you hear the iconic boink noise. In a game like Renegade the killfeed is constant and just gets in the way. How many times have you typed a message into chat, then right after you send it a bunch of stuff happens that pushes it off screen or even just surrounds your text with spam such that people don't notice it.

Either segregate the killfeed/other stuff into another space along the top of the screen, or turn it off. Maybe make it readable from the purchase terminals or by pressing U if you want to look back at it.

I know that @Goztow worked a year or two ago on reducing all the messages but lots of stuff were integrated in the game and hard to play with... he could say more about it.

good point, the chat screen is actually being spammed by the bot messages that we can hardly track the chat posted by players

two possible solutions in my mind if we could do it

remove all bot messages from chat or add an option to let players disable/enable them

move team/public chat to somewhere else like mid/left of the screen

Issue are game sizes. Spread up over more servers and issue is solved.

Unstoppable actually implemented a feature to separate kill feed. But it put the killfeed in the left corner which for me kind of 'sat in the way'. I think it was active on mpf for a while? Maybe a better solution would be if it staid on top but if the kill feed was one batch of messages and the chat was another batch of messages. That way one does not push the other away. I also agree that some messages are not useful for regular players. Just like we have disablesounds, could we maybe implement disablemessages? Which would then hide the auto announcements about the rules and maybe some other stuff? That way new players stay informed but regular players see a bit less clutter. Would that be hard to implement?

As to game size, while I agree with you Eric it's something we tried and didn't really work, remember the forwarder.

Actual issue is rotation with 74 maps which spam over 5 lines. Rules are separated to standalone popup window. Ranks are sent over pages. If we will enforce it people will play on other servers also. Now its enforced only when is server full.

Funny is people are bitching about spammed chat but nobody bitching about spawning vehicles and Im not talking about maps and their size. Optimal size is 32 - 40 players. Anything above causing issues. Disabled advanced kill messages is also sollution. SSGM havent it and thats how was renegade designed.

Player Count

It's just my opinion but I'd say 40-64 is best:
Any higher and every match feels like a stalemate because there are too many defences in each base (be that players defending or engineers in every building).
Any lower and you're at the mercy of whether or not your team decides to join your rush or just wants to snipe/buy some different vehicle.

If RenCorner does want to lower the server player count, perhaps wait till it hits 64 then immediately move half the connected players onto the second server, and reduce both server sizes to 40 each. That way, both servers immediately have 32ish players and people don't need to wait around to start playing, which I believe was the main problem with autoforwarding new joiners.

Textfeed

Regardless, even with lower play count there's still too much going on in the textfeed.

If you went down the text segregation route, it'd need to be something like the attached screenshot. Put the chat into the red side and anything else in the green side.
This way it wouldn't take up any new space on the screen (cos if it did there'd be backlash no doubt).

The problem is, new players would miss out and be subject to the spam whereas people who know about disablemessages would have the advantage of being able to read easier.
Put the server rules in the welcome screen, or maybe even a note that says players can type !help or !rules to see these things. There's no need for any random announcements tbh.

It could work on big resolutions.

Does anyone play below 1080 these days?

Yep. 800x600 is really standard res for "pro" snipers.

I've heard of those types in CS2, wasn't aware of any in Ren! (certainly the streamers/videos of Ren snipers on YouTube aren't at that resolution and they snipe well!)

Plus, if someone's that focused on sniping that they play in 800x600, I doubt they're concerned about missing anything in the team chat and more concerned about playing Renegade like a deathmatch.

Just looking at that screenshot above again and noticed that it's even announced in the chat feed when a new crate spawns! More stuff cluttering up the feed.

Maybe you could make a list of stuff that could be removed from chat? So the dev can have a look at what's easy to do?

800x600 on a 34 inch screen is really pro

Keep:

  • Chat
  • Team chat
  • PM chat
  • Voice commands (whilst yes, you can hear these; it's still important to see who is doing the voice command)

Remove: everything else.
I figured that the real way of making the chat noticable/readable would be to remove the killfeed, but on second thoughts there's actually so many examples of server spam too, check the below stuff out I collected from joining the server and playing for a few minutes:

combo.jpg

I don't see the point in these, the folk with good aim will be concentrating on their shooting and the rest of us don't need the combo announcements taking up space in the chat feed.

cratespawn.jpg

Is this necessary?

loadingjoined.jpg

Notice the top line and bottom line of this screen clipping. At the bottom you'll see Renegade already announces when a player joins the server and what team they join, therefore it's just duplication when RC also announces the playing loading (at the top).

randomserverannouncements.jpg

As previously mentioned, random server announcements. Perhaps the welcome screen could have a message that says "type !rules to see our rules", rather than the server semi-frequently cycle through them in the chat feed.

vehlock.jpg

Do we need to see this every time?

vehdestroyed.jpg

Really, I'd never have noticed...

More needless space-wasting.

It will be nice to be able to configure it on a personal level, because some of the messages you mentioned, @Xylaquin, are messages I'd like to keep.

@Xylaquin makes good points here.

Absolutely. I'd suggest the default should be minimal text, basically chat only stuff as per my previous post.

That would mean by default everyone is on the level-playing field of having a clear screen to communication.

But if they do want the extras then the ability to toggle those should be there, much like it is with sound. (...albeit I personally think the sounds should be opt-in lol)

@Xylaquin I agree with you, ever since the server applied all the sound players can make, I always play with no sound, so I'm only rely on text.

I KNOW I can toggle sound but some comes through and as I'm sharing my home office with my husband, who are really tired of my gaming and especially the new sounds, it became a problem.

So as I said, I only rely on text and so much important information disappers in all the unnecessary texts that keep rolling on the screen.

Agreed on all points minus the crate spawning. If a game is at a stalemate and the crate spawn message comes up, it encourages seeking out the crates IMO.

That's the next topic, reducing the # of sounds.

That's exactly why the crate spawn text should be toggle-able.

The minimal crate spawn sound is not the issue. It's all the un-toggle-able sounds.

I see that moderators are making a great effort now.

Sounds is a different topic.

If we were being really pedantic we could argue that anyone that decides to trigger a sound, in doing so, uses space in the textfeed that doesn't contribute, but I feel that once we get to a stage where it's only really the vanilla Renegade stuff + chat appearing there, anyone randomly typing "pirate" in the chatfeed won't be affecting the feed much.
