Star Citizen

Just curious, but how many SC pledgers are on this forum?

I ask because I am extremely excited about this upcoming game and want to see if anybody else is, as well. Im wanting to take advantage of the Organizations aspect of the game, but Id rather avoid joining a bunch of random people I dont know, if at all possible.

For anybody who doesnt already know, Star Citizen/Squadron 42 is a space-sim/FPS singleplayer/multiplayer/MMO that was successful in a crowdfund campaign and is currently in development. Ok, maybe "successful" is an understatement; it is the single largest crowdfunded software project of all time, currently looking at $40 million+ in pledge money.

If enough Rencorner peeps are interested, we could start our own organization. That would be sweet.

I don't think there are ever enough MMORPG Space Sims...

I totally agree. Unfortunately, Star Citizen contains no traditional RPG elements. :saad:

Next EvE without P2P?

Kinda, kinda not. Itll more closly resemble a F2P style, with a server structure very similar to the first Guild Wars. But you will be able to buy in game money with real money (but not convert it back). Unlike other F2P games, though, they arent going to push it in our face. They dont need to, theyre already successful before the game even launched. ^_^

They are actually releasing the server code so there can be private servers hosting their own persistant universe.

Also, using the official persistant universe will be free (aside from the game purchase itself; similar to Guild Wars), but youll be able to pay cash for things in game like a modern day F2P system. Chris Roberts (CEO/Director) has made it perfectly clear that he doesnt want this to get in the way of the game, and since the game has no publisher whos only intent on making money, Im inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt. Below youll find the direct quotes concerning this.

(Chris Roberts)

I’m very opposed to having a game where ANY of the items, outside of your initial game / ship package can be only purchased with cash. I hate the bifurcation of items in most online games, even when they are just for flair items. I want Star Citizen to allow players to earn everything they need in-game for ships, upgrades and even flair. Our plan is once Star Citizen is launched the games ongoing running and content costs (which will be significant as we’re a data & content heavy game) will be supported by the ongoing purchase of new game packages as well as the money the game will earn by some of the players choosing to buy some UEC credits with real money as they don’t have the time or patience to earn the item in game (and for this I wanted to establish a cap so someone can’t just come in and buy everything, although with a skill based game with a heavy rock paper scissors approach to ship design and weapons this won’t help that much as you think). We are making the bet that this will be enough to cover the game ongoing running costs and we will not need a subscription like other big online games live Eve Online or World of War Craft. But it is a risk as we’re taking some of the things that games use to support on-going running costs like sale of flair items and making them not require money just gameplay.

For the record here are my simple rules for what I'm aiming for with Star Citizen (and personal play preference)1) NO grind - basic gameplay should be fun.2) NO subscription to play. Once you've bought the game you should be able to play and have fun without paying another penny. Maybe this is from all the MMOs I signed up for and then didn't have time to play yet still had to pay to keep my character (I think I paid over 2 years of subs for both WoW and SWG before I canceled, despite only playing them for the first month or so!)3) NO unfair advantage to people with either too much money or too much time. I think its disingenuous for people to claim that they should have a big advantage just because they can commit 40 hours a week in play time over someone that can only spend 4. Both types of player have purchased the game and are both entitled to have fun. If I make a game that only caters to people that have lots of time and nothing else I'm cutting out a huge part of the audience. The same goes if I build a game that just caters to people that have money to burn (The Asian P2W game style). Just because someone plays one way doesn't mean everyone should play that way. Some people will want to just spend a few hours dogfighting, some may want spend dozens of hours doing trade runs and building up a merchant empire. Others may just want to explore corners of the galaxy. A big audience supplies lots of players to make the universe more interesting. A big audience also spreads the costs of running the persistent universe (as it costs money for new content and servers), which in turn makes it cheaper for all.4) NO Pay2Win - You should never be able to buy anything with real money that you can't buy in with in game credits. Once fully live SC in-game items will only be purchasable with in-game credits. There will even be some items you can ONLY earn by playing / flying missions. All you will be able to spend money on that is gameplay related would be buying some in-game credits as you don't want or don't have enough time to earn the credits you need for your contemplated purchase. We'll cap purchase of in-game credits to avoid someone unbalancing the game / economy. Finally as I point out above skill will always play a factor - there will be no "magic spaceship of death" that will sweep all before it, so while you may have bought a more expensive spaceship / weapon a better pilot can still beat you (this is where people with lots of time get an advantage as they'll have spent a lot more time honing their combat skills!)

lol

Im currently in an ORG (just joined last night), but if enough peeps get in on this, we'll start our own. BTW, I know info about the game can be difficult to come by (too much rather than too little), so feel free to ask me any questions.

BTW, I see three peeps saying they were interested in joining (entropy, Aurum and Kanoboii). Any other takers?
