Windows 10

As soon as microsoft start doing stuff like that, there will be a huge shift either back to windows 7, or towards linux (SteamOS comes to mind). Despite evidence to the contrary (vista, eight, etc), microsoft probably isn't stupid enough to throwaway market share that easily.

There's far more worrying clauses in the windows 10 EULA than disabling pirated games tbh

EDIT: to be on topic, Guardian ftw

I read that people are really upset because forced updates are causing them huge bills for going over their data caps ... woo Microsoft!

We had a power outage for about 15 mins, I just upgraded my wife (Lizto) to win10 Saturday, I now can't get to the desktop.  I get the win10 logo, but the next thing I see is the stupid circle alternating flashing on and off with the cursor.  Oh yeah, I can get into the system setting before the logo.  I can't even get into safe mode!  Don't know what I am gonna do, since I have no disk.  A downside to the downloaded version.

No, I updated Saturday, I had the outage Monday.  It was installed.  I may have corrupted a file, but since I can't get in, I have (or my wife has) a problem.  Either way it is mine to fix.

Should be able to press F8 after bios on the blinking cursor. Should setup a recovery status for you. dw

As far as pirating and all that jazz, if Microsoft is listening to me, let them. I'm just basically making Cortana my sex slave  err.. workhorse. Anyway, I haven't noticed anything like that, I only really use or want to use Windows 10 as my streaming Windows.

@Joetorp If you can, download the relevant iso file from here and burn it to a usb stick (I use rufus for this) or dvd. Boot from the stick and on the first or second screen there should be an option to repair (link is in the bottom left of the screen iirc). However, if your upgrade wasn't activated before it stopped working you may have to revert to the old OS and redo the upgrade

@gumby Yeah, private eye is usually pretty funny

There are too many cons with windows 10 for my taste.

Windows updates are now forced.

The start menu looks like something you'd order a hamburger from.

The taskbar icons are stuck there. Who the hell cares about Bing Search?!?

The pirate thing you initially mentioned. It'd be less of a hassle to allow the NSA onto your PC than Microsoft.

You'll be able to downgrade back to 7 at anytime, which is a plus...because you're going to need it if you ever get a new PC/hard drive. Windows 10 is locked to that one PC you're licensed for.

If you restart you computer 3 times, Windows10 will bring up a recovery screen, and you can do a system restore or other things to repair a broken system.

I was wondering if my files (entire disk) will be wiped off when i upgrade. I have postponed my upgrade for this very reason as the data is too much to backup, let alone erased.

Microsoft is really going downhill with these "all in one" shit and as billie said its about time people start learning some new (and better) OS'es. Unless ofcourse it brings us the "next gen xp".

Lucky, your files will not be destroyed.  If you have soooooo much data that you are concerned about no room to backup, get a 2TB drive,  that should be plenty of room for a back up.

No it won't, everything remains where you left it, even desktop icons. Games could be played on the go without reinstall (Ren needed to be run as Admin to work properly, but everything else was just fine).

Honestly I've had a worse impression when W8 came out, 10 is really slick and fast-running. Ofc you need to switch off a ton of privacy settings from the go but it's running amazingly well for such a new/unproven OS.
